If I lived in London, I know exactly what I would do,I would go to see People like us, Vicky Bennett, here:Preview Event: Thursday 28 July 2011. 6‐10pm. Shortwave Cinema, Bermondsey Square. FREE.A collection of short films by Vicki Bennett/People Like Us ‐ including Excerpts from “Genre Collage” ‐ will be screened on loop throughout the evening, with an introduction by the artist at 7pm. There will also be musical accompaniment provided by Osymyso and Mainwaring & Jurgensen in the bar.And I would also already buy tickets for her show “Sound Of Fear” on 3rd of September at London’s Southbank Centre. But sadly I do not live in London, but the rest of you do! Hurray for you! So, I would really very much recommend this.I am also taking an internet break now, I will be on holiday from next week until the end of August and hopefully only very rarely see a computer and instead read books, swim and hang out in the forest. So, I wish you guys a nice few summer weeks with plenty of sun and swimming and I’ll write when im back again, ciao!

I went to see a really nice exhibition tonight, Yto Barrada at the Deutsche Guggenheim, she has been nominated to Deutsche Bank artist of the year, her film “handed-down” was great and I liked the large size of the images, 100x100 mainly, although some of the things portrayed were rather small, like paper cut ups for dresses, or a wall with traces from picture frames. Mainly images from Tanger where she lives, I found them beautiful, here. Then I came home, early, because I fell of my bike today and felt kind off tired of my clumsiness, but on the telephone my mum told me that Shaun Tan, above, has won the ALMA prize and is coming to give a speech in Vimmerby, my tiny hometown, on Saturday. So I looked him up, here, and I would love to see his books, the drawings look great, so for once there is a cultural activity in Vimmerby that might be interesting! well well, incredible.

Hello Plats friends,I too have been busy, or Im not quite sure but the days have gone very fast, and there has not been much to write about, I read and make images and spend a lot of time in the studio, I travel to Leipzig and back to go to meetings and hang out and cycle in Berlin, We even went swimming at the weekend in Teufelsee, a little lake in the south west of Berlin, my parents came to visit last month and some friends too, and slowly Berlin is starting to feel a little bit more like a home. So that’s great! Apart from that, there’s a group show in Norway now with my work in it , have a look here: Vestfossen. I think it runs all summer and it is an exhibition about fear, I hope to get to see it too! I’ve also been to see the work of photographer Leigh Ledare, whose book I would really like to get, and then afterwards we went to see an exhibition by Boris Mikhailov, whom I really like, strange presentation of the exhibition but somehow it suited the topic. All the days with sunshine makes it hard to go into museums and into the studio but these two shows were well worth it. But mainly I feel like eating ice cream, my new favourite being strawberry- mint and white chocolate. The studio house has turned into something like a treasure box, I keep opening doors and there’s the next room waiting, so it feels great to be there and make work. I think Im lucky to have found this place, and that’s where Im going now. Rather fun to get to know a new city though, especially now when it’s showing itself at it’s best.

The days go quick in Berlin, it is finally proper spring here. I keep travelling back and forth to Leipzig but I really enjoy getting back here every time. Have spent some days doing up the studio and today I hope to find some furniture and manage to transport it there somehow, something that without a driver’s license is kind of tricky. We went to see an exhibition in the beautiful Schinkel pavillon called Animal Kingdom, lots of short films about animals from artists like Douglas Gordon, Fischli/Weiss and Werner Herzog. But my favourite were two underwater films from Jean Painlevé, one about seahorses, L’hippocampe, and one about the love life of an octopus. Beautiful! I couldn’t find them online, but here is another film from him. Was quite nice to sit in the gallery for one and a half hour and watch different animal film, everything from slugs to grizzly bears..

Hello, the sun is shining on Berlin, which makes the city look a hundred times more inviting.. I am on the search for a studio still and have been looking in many odd places, mainly basements without light, and now Im hoping to find something with light so that I can actually work. But tomorrow,Thursday, Im heading back to Leipzig to see an exhibition by a friend, Steve Viezens in Gallery Kleindienst, which would translate into gallery “small service”. The same night there’s also an opening in Gallery B2 with the artist group VIP that I really like so this should be fun. Apart from that I am only too happy to see the spring coming since I have been ill for most of the last three months and I hope that will finally come to an end now.Greetings to you guys in London, from me at a very big, strangely built and home made working desk in Berlin, our “livingroom” has turned into an office.

Two exhibitions in Malmö and London: After a week in Berlin it’s time to head off again, this time with train to Copenhagen and and Malmö, with bags full of framed images that I hope we can carry without breaking our backs.

In Malmö I am participating in a group show, there is a Photography festival going on there over the weekend, click here for full program, it looks like it could be good! My work is on display with “Skanes Konstförening”, here.

Im looking forward to going back to Sweden, even if it’s only for a few days and I can’t wait to eat a Semla! For those of you who do not know what that is, here is an image from this page were someone has put together a list of were to buy the best one’s in Sweden. It is basically a bun with creme and almond, but it’s great! So between hanging the exhibition and meeting friends I will be in the bakery and eat as many of those as I can and then when I have stuffed myself full I will fly to London, that is if the plane can carry such a heavy Semla as that what I have then become.

In London is the exhibition opening of mine and David O’Kanes images for “The way of the cross”, on the 8th of March at 7.30, here, and there is also a book launch for a publication showing the different artist’s responses to the stations over the last five years. I never thought I would make images for a church but I think the end result is interesting and Im looking forward to the opening night, also because we got Carol Anne McGowan to do a concert for the night and that will probably be incredibly beautiful. So yeah, you should come along! That’s what I will be up to for the next week and a half, travels and exhibitions. Should be good!
In Berlin we went to see a nice little show with 75 artist books from Sol LeWitt, it was at the Art Laboratory in Wedding, a small space were one can also ask to be shown the books out of the display cases, so that was cool! Well worth a visit, it’s open for two more weeks.
Now I have to arrange some stuff, print out tickets and write down information. I finally managed to register in Berlin, last week I met with a woman who clearly hated her job and people who can’t understand bureaucracy, like me, she was incredibly unfriendly but today a nice young man who was into photography helped me so it was easy peasy and now I officially live in Berlin. Well done me. I don’t know why I am so dumbstruck as soon as it comes to paperwork of this kind, maybe because I never payed attention in the classes dealing with these kind of things in school, but now when I have to understand it in German too..I just feel like I want to go home to Sweden, nevermind, I shall be brave.
So, hopefully see you soon, either in Malmö or in London!

Exhibition and some stress: Hello, I haven’t written for a while now, but somehow time has gone very quick the last weeks, on Friday I’m already leaving this place for Sweden and Christmas. But before that, tonight, there is a little exhibition from me and three other ladies in a room at the HGB.

Joachim made us the beautiful postcard with a crashed duck, I think it will be a fun night. Im showing a projection of 84 slides that I made with stuffed birds from 1890-1912, a treasure that I borrowed from a friend, the birds still look gorgeous after all those years put away in a shoebox, maybe because they were conserved with arsenic back in the days. Apart from that I am working on my big number one project, hoping somehow to get all the interviews I want and get access to the archives I want to visit in different countries, but all this organization takes time and is kind of hard since I don’t speak French, can’t believe I learned French for seven years in school and now all I do is speaking German and French is all gone, hardly a trace left.

Time to head off and finish the last things for this little exhibition, if anyone reads this in Leipzig then do come by!

Hello, it was a busy week somehow in it’s luxury. Photographing on Monday, seminar about film and text on Tuesday and Wednesday, then train to Berlin. Spent the Thursday looking for props such as latex masks and a fake mustache and some beards and although I went to the small shop for magicians on Hermannstraße where I’ve seen those things before they were now all gone in the Hallowen rush, so, I suppose I have to look online. on Thursday evening we went to Kulturforum to see the exhibition “Welt als Schrift”, or the World as words/typography, the photograph above is from a page that writes about the book, I know you might not be able to read German but click on the image anyway and take a look. Starting 1890 and ending around 2010 the book and exhibition shows examples of different fonts/designs/posters/ well, all kinds of printed matter really. I found the basement floor a beauty and I think for a graphic designer it might be a small dream with Jan Tschichold, El Lissitzky, Dada and many more. So that was great and on another floor in the house there is an exhibition called Words as Image which is based on work from the middle ages, incredible drawings made up of tiny tiny pieces of text, I thought I had been writing small but these lines were so fine, incredible, it must have taken ages. And also some drawings and decorations of holy scripts made by nuns with little creatures looking like headfoot animals and fine patterns, reminding me of figures from Hieronymus Bosch.

Friday was Mar tin Gropius Bau and an exhibition with László Moholy- Nagy. They showed films, photographs, books, dia’s, paintings, collages and sketches for stage settings, so pretty much a bit of everything. The films were black and white from Marseille, Berlin and London Zoo, they had a very quick editing and some amazing images. I also really enjoyed watching a film his students had made in 1945 called “Don’t Disturb” were they are just messing around trying out different tricks, cut and paste and incredible colors, lots of fun. I tried to find it in internet but no luck, so no link but you can watch a film of László Moholy- Nagy here.

Then we went to c/o Berlin were I skipped the black and white rather ugly framed exhibition of fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh whom Im sure many people find fantastic but Im not so keen on that kind of photography.

Next doors to his giant prints were some small color photographs from Fred Herzog and they were fantastic. Dias from 1950s Vancouver, brilliant colors and the streets look just great. I kind of wanted to get the book but it was a bit pricy and small somehow a strange format. There seem to be many good shows coming up at c/o Berlin this spring and since I am finally taking the step of moving to Berlin from Leipzig at the end of January, if all goes well, then there’s plenty of exhibitions to look forward too..

We had to get back to Leipzig yesterday so I missed out on the opening of Nan Goldin’s exhibition but im not too bothered, I think I have already experienced her at her best when she got awarded the Hasselblad prize in Gothenburgh and Boris Mikhailov came up on stage and pulled out a papercrown from his suitpocket and put it on her head, ah, sweet. My head is sore after staying out too late for the dorian concept concert in Connie Island last night, which I really enjoyed(!) and therefore I think I will stop now. Enough fun for a week and back to work, which..I must say..also is fun when it just involves making images and not applying and doing crap paperwork.

Feel like I just wrote that it was weekend but now it seems to be here soon again, on Friday we are heading off to Frankfurt, a much needed travel in Germany for me since I have not see much of the country apart from Berlin, Leipzig and Dresden… We are visiting the Prinzhorn collection on Sunday, I wrote about it in my dissertation in Glasgow and about this piece here from Emma Hauk, so it will be great to see it finally in real life and not just in library books. Apart from that I am trying to apply for a scholarship and sitting here with my computer when I would much rather be working in the studio and make images instead. This whole application procedure, I wonder if one ever gets used to it and stop spending hours doing it each time.

"How to make a book with Steidl": The weekend is over, it has been a very good one. On Saturday lots of findings in the sun at a very good fleamarket here in Leipzig, great stuff for images and some things that Im not quite sure what I will use for but that I bought anyhow. Big success. Today we went to a small city called Jena to see an exhibition by Louise Bourgeois, it was a very small place and somehow the sculptures looked much to big for it and the selction of drawings were not so great but I did very much like getting a chance to see "He dissapeared into complete silence" as I find those nine engravings so beautiful and witty. So that made the journey very much worthwhile, I would really have liked to meet her and it makes me angry that actually it was possible to go to her studio and I missed out on it because I did not know about it the one time I was in New York, well, anyhow, it might not have been so good to go there either, not always a great plan to meet your idols I suppose. Then we hurried back to Leipzig to go and see the documentary "How to make a book with Steidl" about Gerhard Steidl and his journeys across the world. Seems to be an incredibly hard working man, but what a great job. Paris and Chanel for meetings one day and the next Robert Frank in Mabou which seemed great, I loved the scene where Robert Frank is searching through his polaroid trying to find the most suitable one for the last page in one of his books, sweet, I found it very interesting and funny seeing this man with all his books and strong will.
Now I just got back, have made a fire to try and heat up this place but it seems like a lost cause tonight, crazy that it’s getting so cold again already, if it continues this way I will spend my winter days in the library, studio and cinema and not at home.

Hello again, since I am not in London it would make me very happy if one of you guys would maybe like to have a look at this show for me as one drawing I made is in it. If you did go then maybe you could tell me how the place looks and if it’s an interesting show.. it should be open from now and until 19th November, “Center for recent Drawing”, Highbury Street. Bad timing from my side since I was indeed in the city two weeks ago..

I meant to post this a while back… it’s a sneaky picture from the SKIN show at the Wellcome Collection right now. It’s two ladies in the 20’s using rubber masks to preserve their beauty in a really terrifying and oddly serene way. But the skin show is completely inspiring and at times revolting. I consider myself to have quite strong nerves (as long as I’m allowed to be uncontrollably tearing) and was impressed by the exhibits managing to be simultaneously fascinating and uncomfortable. Watching a doctor’s training video from the 60’s showing them shaving the skin off of a leg for a graft actually damn near made me lose it. Anyway, go see it if you can…. or check out what’s available online… I mentioned this to you Nadja, I think it’s right up your alley… and potential collaboration fuel.
